How Eurail Flexi Passes Work

Eurail Flexi Passes are valid for a two month period from when they are validated on the first day they are used. When purchasing your flexi pass you need to decide whether you will spend up to ten or fifteen days during the two month period travelling on the Eurail network and purchase the apropriate pass for your vacation.

You are then able to travel anywhere anytime for a total of ten or fifteen days during the two month validity period on the Eurail network depending on the pass you purchased.

A Eurail pass day runs from midnight to midnight and not for a 24 hour period from when your train journey begins, however, direct overnight train or boat journeys uses up only one of your travel days if you board after 7 p.m and disembark before midnight the following day.

There are three different rate structures, namely:-

  • The Adult Rate is for 1st class travel for passengers 26 years of age or older.
  • The Saver Rate is for 1st class travel per person based on two or more traveling together at all times on the same pass.
  • The Youth Rate is for 2nd class travelfor passengers who are under the age of 26 on the first day of their train travel.

Eurail Flexi Pass

The Eurail Flexi Pass is available only to people resident outside Europe, the Russian Federation, Turkey, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.

The Eurail Flexi Pass offers unlimited rail travel over the national railways, and some private railways, of Austria (OBB), Belgium (SNCB), Denmark (DSB), Finland (VR), France (SNCF), Germany (DB), Greece (CH), Hungary (MAV), Italy (FS), Luxembourg (CFL), Netherlands (NS), Norway (NSB), Portugal (CP), Republic of Ireland (CIE), Spain (RENFE), Sweden (SJ) and Switzerland (CFF/SBB) as well as certain shipping lines.

Eurail Pass holders are normally exempt from fast and quality trains supplements, however when the supplement includes additional onboard services, pass holders are required to pay a charge.

Your pass does not guarantee a seat on the train. When you plan to travel long distances you should make reservations in advance. On some trains it is even compulsory. Reservations are also compulsory for overnight sleeping facilities. Special trains such as EC, IC, TGV (French high speed train), X2000 (Swedish high speed train), Bernina Express, Panoramic Express, etc.are included in your pass. Seat reservation often is compulsory (please inquire in advance) and is not free of charge.

Validating Your Eurail Flexi Pass

Before you hop on that first train in Europe, have an official at the station validate your railpass. He or she will also write in the beginning and ending dates of your pass validity, and your passport number.

At any European train station, present your railpass and passport to a railway official at a ticket window, who will write in the first and last dates of your travel period. For example, a two-month validity period starting May 15 will end at midnight on July 14. You may want to write these dates European style (15.05.06– 14.07.06) on a slip of paper to show the ticket agent. All trips and bonuses must be started and finished within the valid life of your pass. If you have a group pass (i.e. a Saverpass or Twin Pass), all group members must be present when the pass is validated.

You may validate your country pass before arriving in that country, or en route. Let’s say you’re in Munich with a French railpass, you’re heading to Paris, and you want the French portion of your route to be covered by your French railpass. At the Munich train station, buy a ticket to the French border and have the agent validate your French pass at the same time.

Note: You may be charged $5 to $30 (in local currency) to have your pass validated on the train. Approach the conductor; don’t let him “catch” you with an unvalidated pass as he’ll assume you’re trying to cheat.

Using Your Eurail Flexipass

On your flexipass, you’ll see a string of blank boxes, one for each travel day available to you. You can take as many trips as you like within each travel day.

Before boarding the train (or bus or boat covered 100% by your pass), fill in that day’s date in ink in one of the blank boxes on your pass. A railpass day normally runs from midnight to midnight, but a direct overnight train or boat journey uses up only one of your travel days if you board after 7 p.m. (for most passes; see 7 p.m. rule table for specifics). In that case, you just write the next day’s date on your pass. If the very first use of your flexipass is for an overnight ride, you still write the next day’s date, though your pass will be validated for the actual date you board.

Unless you’re taking a train that requires a reservation just hop on the train with your pass. After the train starts, the conductor will head down the train, checking for tickets and passes. Simply show the conductor your pass. He or she may ask to see your passport too.

All rides must be started and completed within the validity period of the pass.

High Speed Trains

Usually additional fees are required for the use of high speed trains such as ICE (Germany), AVE and Talgo (Spain), Pendolino and ETR 500 (Italy), Pendolino S220 (Finland) ETR/Cisalpino (Switzerland/Italy), Thalys (France/Belgium/Netherlands). These fees include extra services on board. A seat reservation is compulsory. Please inquire in advance.

Night Trains

When planning to use an overnight train you have to make a reservation in advance for a sleeper or a couchette and pay a supplement. For the use of hotel trains, such as InterCity Night (Germany), CityNightLine (Austria, Germany, Switzerland), EuroNight, hotel trains in Spain etc. additional charges are required. These additional charges include overnight accommodation, breakfast, other services on board. Reservation is compulsory. Please inquire in advance as there are many different kinds of accommodation and fees may differ considerably.

Each Eurail Pass Order Includes:

  • Special Discount fares on high-speed Premier trains such as Eurostar, Thalys and Artesia.
