On night trains through France, four-passenger couchette accommodations require a first-class ticket or pass (while two- or six-passenger sleepers accept second class). In either class, daytime TGV seat reservations cost $4 per seat in France or $11 in the U.S. The number of reservations available to passholders is limited, so it's wise to book early for weekends, summer, and any train you can't afford to miss.

Rail service in Germany is comprehensive, fast, frequent, and expensive. The German Flexipass is a good value, often saving money while allowing you to hop trains at your convenience. Most routes, including InterCityExpress trains, do not need reservations (but night trains and the rare Berlin-Frankfurt ICE Sprinter do require reservations). Two people traveling together each save 25% with a Twinpass. All passes for Germany also cover border towns such as Salzburg, Austria, and Basel, Switzerland on trips to or from Germany. Passes are not valid on CityNightLine trains or Germany-Italy night trains unless they cover your whole route, nor on the few Hamburg-Cologne departures called "Metropolitan." Second class is comfortable and preferred by most leisure travelers.
